1) could someone sub in a KT88 in lieu of the KT90? Or an EL34? Major surgery or minor"same day outpatient" procedure?

Just plug n' play. The only difference would be Zo
KT90 is .66 ohm
KT88 is .88 ohm
EL34 is .91 ohm
I think a KT66 might be pushing it but these sure could do the job.

2) 12A4 does appear to have some good specs/characteristics.... how abundant are they? Often... I like to use tubes that give you an option between current production and NOS opportunities.

There seems to be a good supply of NOS but no new production - sorry. You could substitute the ECC99 and change the NiCad to 6.8V, for about the same operating point.

3) the CCCS on the cathode... could a "cathode choke" be subbed in there if one wanted to go in that direction? Is it possible?

It is possible but then you need the RC bias booster circuit again, only much larger than Andrea's (about 4K ohm w bypass cap), which I didn't like about his circuit in the first place(a low voltage swing).

4) do you know the current rating on the PRC-1 and what the dcr is?

PRC-1 SPEC's
11H - 115mA - 64 ohm DCR
Two windings per unit w M6 lams
Power supply was modeled on PSUII

I am curious how that part of the circuit will work (ie one double choke used in the PS).
Will the ripple from the first stage influence the ripple of the second stage? I think the ripple reduction will be reduced on the first stage but increased on the second stage, so about the same ripple output. But that's just a guess...

5) the high voltage winding (indicated at 520V)... what is the current required from the circuit? about 75 mils dc?

75mA per Channel
150mA Total

I did just get some huge caps from e-bay (4 caps for $10 ea) for the PS Seems like over kill I know, but I will use them as a barrier between the PS section and the audio section, as well as filtration...

to be continued?

Always.
